Created in 2010 at Festival Danse a Lille, Madonna brings to life the enigmatic tableaux of la Vierge Noir.
These “Black Madonnas,” enigmas from the Middle Ages found throughout Europe, have been explained as the product of an accident, the wood's tainting by candle smoke, and the protective covering of gold paint with soot for safe transport... Or is it something else?
This solos in Madonna investigate the phenomenon of cultural archetype transformation. Calling upon earth and pagan goddesses, these Madonnas shed extraneous layers of paint, which free them from the limitations of the past to celebrate the unique quality and colors of Her and celebrate that She is “woman”.
